Here is Day 8’s challenge.
Using variables, create a project that counts the number of times something happens and responds when the count reaches a certain number. (Remember, if you get stuck, find inspiration and support in the Teaching with Scratch Facebook group, our list of Getting Unstuck strategies, or on Twitter at #CreativeComputing.)
Add your Scratch projectto this studio to share how you approached today’s challenge. Then, check out and comment on some other examples in the studio!
Take a moment to reflect on your creative process in the Notes and Credits section of your project. What did you like most about your project? What would you do with it next, if you had more time?
What I think and did
I already made a game that used variables and kept score in an earlier challenge. This time I want to try out some gamification. I hope to gamify my classes next year so I’ll try some strategies out now. I want to make a game, where a player has to collect 4 items, in a simple maze, and when they do, they get a badge. I was discussing Muppets with a friend on a hike, I love Stadler and Waldorf, and she said she loved Beaker. I love Beaker too so I decided Beaker would search for beakers in my maze. When he (is Beaker a he? It’s pretty nonconforming) collects all 4 Beaker gets a badge. I wanted to add one extra challenge, Beaker is too big to get to a beaker, so it needs to get the differently colored beaker 1st, which shrinks Beaker, then it can finish collecting all the beakers, and get the badge. It’s a lot, but I want to make games like this, teach my students to make games like this, and even make games to contribute to our gamified classroom. We’ll see how I do, the well laid plans of mice and men . . .
Click the green flag, touch your mouse pointer to Beaker, move him through the tunnel, to get home. Pick up beakers along the way, how will you get through the smaller tunnel? Don’t touch the tunnel walls or else you’ll get stuck, Beaker will cry for help, and you’ll have to wait 5 seconds before starting again.
