My fitness goal this summer is to weigh 170 pounds on September 1st, 2017. I have always been healthy and liked to exercise, unfortunately, I like to eat too. I have maintained my weight mostly, the problem is, it hovers about 10 pounds above my goal. I have never embraced fad diets or special weight loss regimens. I’m not going to start either, but I am willing to try a few new things, to reach my goal.
I decided to try to have a smoothie at least once, and sometimes twice, a day as a meal replacement. I’m not trying to starve, but my digestive system has been in full revolt lately, and smoothies don’t bother my stomach. This will help me to stop inflammation and irritation and help me lose weight too. I’ve been using high fiber hemp protein powder, which also brings other much needed digestive benefits. Adding the cacao nibs gives every smoothie a chocolatey taste which I like. Dinners we eat regular meals, but while I’m home for the summer I’ve been trying the breakfast and lunch meal replacements. Having spent 10 days in Spain, we are adopting more tapas style dishes, as the whole meal, so portion sizes are decreasing too. I feel full and not hungry, and have not experienced much stomach distress. This is a success.
I have always exercised so this is not an area I need too much help with. This week I have been swimming, took a yoga class, did 2 days of upper body strength training (ST), one day of lower body ST, and one cardio only day. I walk my dog 3 times a day, probably about 2 miles total over the course of a day. I also do stretching/yoga/meditation in the morning when I get up, and in the evening before I go to bed. I love this. This week however, I was not as regular with my meditation. Finally, I live in a really convenient urban neighborhood, so I walk many places in addition to my scheduled exercise times. I know a big part of the battle is just maintaining an active lifestyle, which I do, despite minor fluctuations in exercise routines.
Last week when I committed to this weight goal, I weighed 185, this morning, 186. WTF!? Am I giving up? Nope. Am I disappointed, yes. I have been slowly regaining my digestive regularity so that is certainly a factor. I also had a few glasses of wine and beer during the week. It’s summer, I’m a teacher, we live for our summers. That said, I’ll try no alcohol during the week this week, and just wine on the weekends. When I lived in France, I heard people say, Wine or water, that’s the only choice. I’ll try to stick with that, or smoothies. While I want to weigh 170, I’ll consider it highly successful if I can reach 175, but goal achieved is 170. Hopefully by next post, I’ll be at 183, short term goals, yay.
I have an EDU conference coming up this week, I get a per diem of $41 and change for food. I’m going to search for some smoothie places to see if I can keep it going. My hotel has a gym and a pool so I should be able to keep exercising. I’ll be curious to see how it all shakes (pun intended) out next week.
Why do I include this in my EDU blog? Teaching is stressful. Self care is essential. Our students deserve our best. Self care can include drugs, alcohol, destructive behavior, health, exercise, wellness, stress management. Only some are part of a sustainable future. Please follow and like us:
